Do you think about the ways that the media tells stories and presents facts? Do you wonder who decides what stories are important enough to make ‘the news’? Or how computer-generated algorithms influence what we hear about and how we understand our world?

You can join Citizen J, a series of workshops with artist collective Make or Break to examine and respond to these issues. Equal parts analytical, technical and creative, we will learn together how to conduct media analysis, build bots and influence media cycles. Requires no programming or journalism experience, only a creative and/or analytical mind, and a curiosity for language and power.

Make or Break is the collaborative practice of artists Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo. They co-author projects with communities, examining systems that influence the ways we live and work. Their projects take many different forms, including creating experimental economies, collectively imagining new monuments and celebrating the invisible labour of strangers.

Citizen J is a project produced by UTS Gallery and Art Collection, as part of UTS Art Live. This project is made possible with the support and collaboration of the UTS Journalism Society and the UTS Tech Society.
